“Message Madness” accesses data in the player's social network via an interface (Facebook Connect API). Current status updates from their Facebook contacts are integrated into the game as generative (typo) graphic 3D objects and personalize the action. The player, acting from a first-person perspective, is flooded with status updates from their network and must click them away before they reach them.
The majority of “social games” use the players' social network as a mere resource for the game and reduce the social aspect of gaming to the effective use of social capital. The game mechanics of Message Madness take this to the extreme. The game mechanics critically examine the typical Facebook usage process of working through communicative acts in one's own social network in an assembly line fashion, not out of a sense of connection, but as a “time waster” for pure entertainment. The game addresses the aspect of “information overload” by interpreting status updates in the form of a simple arcade game as an “attack” on one's own time.
